Pippa is a research communication and publishing consultant, working for her own company, PSP Consulting. After qualifying with a degree in publishing she has worked in academic and research publishing in a variety of roles including production management and business development. She has extensive experience of advising on academic publishing and rights management around the world, and has developed and run many training courses and established publishing systems for publishers. She now runs a consulting business, researching and writing on publishing issues, and running training courses.

Claire Minto, SAGE
Claire Minto is a Senior Commissioning Editor in the STM department at SAGE. She joined SAGE in August 2006 following six years at Academic Press and Elsevier where she was responsible for a journals and books programme within the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases division. Claire is now responsible for acquiring new biomedical journals, building and maintaining Society partnerships and managing a portfolio of medical journals.

Susan Lord, SAGE
Susan Lord has held senior international editorial positions in STM publishing, predominantly at Elsevier and Academic Press, working mostly on journals in the biosciences and physical sciences. After 15 years working in Amsterdam and New York, she returned to the UK to work for Academic Press as Editor-in-Chief, Life Sciences (Europe). Early in her publishing career at Elsevier, Susan worked in an editorial office running the peer review system in the area of her scientific expertise, and also spent 3 years as a biomedical journals' marketing manager. She was also the Managing Editor of one of Elsevier's Trends magazines. More recently, she has taken time out from STM publishing to work for the International Federation of Leprosy Charities as a scientific coordinator as well as liaising with the WHO on the preparation of the strategy document for the 5 year plan for the Elimination of Leprosy. Susan currently works part-time for SAGE publishers as a STM Journals Commissioning Editor, as well as working free-lance as a business facilitator and mediator.

Overview:
This is an introductory course covering all aspects of journals publishing for those who are at the beginning of their careers. It covers everything from peer review to online delivery, and provides delegates with a clear understanding of how all the elements in this fast-moving area fit together.

  • Publishing ethics
  • Subscriptions, licensing and consortia
  • Other means of access to content: open access, philanthropic arrangements, pay-per-view
  • Online journals: publisher sites, aggregators

  • Fulfilment and customer service
  • Marketing
  • Measures of success (metrics, financial performance)
  • Some issues: online archiving/repositories; libraries and pricing; the evolving journal

Learning objectives - by the end of the course delegates will be able to:
Understand the role of the editor and editorial office; know what happens to a paper after acceptance; understand how journal finances work; know about the subscription cycle, subscription agents and customer service; appreciate what goes into a journal marketing plan and how it is executed; and be aware of some of the threats and opportunities in the future for journal publishers.

Who should take this course:
All those new to journals publishing, working in production, editorial, marketing or subscriptions; also those who have been out of this area for several years and are seeking a refresher.
