Skillset is the UK government funded Sector Skills Council (SSC) for Creative Media which comprises TV, film, radio, interactive media, animation, computer games, facilities, photo imaging and publishing. ALPSP is involved in guiding the work of Skillset related to publishing through membership of the Publishing Skills Council which is made up of representatives from employers and relevant industry organisations.

Audrey McCulloch represents ALPSP on the Publishing Skills Council. Jackie Mitchell from the Royal Society of Chemistry is also a member of the Council as an employer representative from the non-profit scholarly sector involved in journal publishing. The Chair of the Publishing Skills Council is Matt Prior of Redwood Publishing.

Skillset are currently reviewing the National Occupational Standards for publishing, which provide a description of the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for many different roles.  Although the previous version of the standards focussed mainly on book publishing, the updated version will encompass journal publishing and skills required for digital publishing.
